People still want to freak out to the music!

exclusive interview for The Italo Job

The Italo Job: Hi guys, we follow from a long time your works and we are very honored to be able to have an interview with you!
Kinky Afro: Likewise guys, we are more than pleased you asked for a chat

TIJ: We start from your name, it’s clear the reference to the Happy Mondays…
KA: Yes the Mondays was a good catch but you won’t hear much of them in our sets, we simply loved that title and we often feel like we’ve got a brother to crucify today.

TIJ: sorry but, what the hell are u doing with that kind of music? I don’t mind!!
KA: Nothing, if you aren’t looking further your nose.
However that was part of our music playground, we’ve grown when acid broke and we loved that magic combination between youth culture and music style, our big brothers saw it first in the late 70’s NYC, and the kids are now probably seeing in … Well, I don’t know mate, we are really not sure what is defining youth culture nowadays. Apart from Apple Inc and Instagram.

TIJ: In Italy, instead? How is the current “club culture”?
KA: Probably not the best people to ask for that, we are not big punters ourselves to be honest. A few years ago, in 2008ish the scene in Italy had big acts that started so genuinely (Crookers and Bloody Beetroots to mention a couple) but today we can’t outline similar big names on the game, yet there are a lot of light weight nu-disco producers that deliver excellent edits and tunes.

TIJ: Here at The Italo Job, we ask often the origin of your musical research. In your mix there are everything, never obvious and every song it’s more beautiful than the last. In your attitude seems to be something deliciously retro but at the same time extraordinarily actual. Do you think this is the direction to be followed?
KA: Thanks for your kind words, I’d like to point out playing the unexpected is never on purpose, such things usually happen just when we feel like we could drop a boring one.
We like people being surprised when they listen to us because it is like rewarding their attention.
And for all things predictable, there is always your ex school friend and his shared videos on Facebook.

TIJ: It may seem an obvious question, but we’d like to know your musical tastes, especially after listening to your playlist. I see many records on the walls…
KA: Early House, Ska, Surf Exotica, Dub, Pre 83 Italo Disco, Electro Funk … too much to list but you get the picture.
They go way beyond nu-disco which is by the way something we consider a disposable genre, like everything happened with the past 10/15 years, none of those genres will probably be an inspiration for the future generation.
Fidget house? Blog house? Come on.

TIJ: and now? What do you like of the current music scene? What’s your favourite bands and with which DJs you’d like to share the stage?
KA: There’d be quite a fews indeed, but we are terrified by the idea of discovering them DJ’ing with laptops.
We’d like to see Rayko, Sean Johnston, Serge Santiago, Drop Out Orchestra and Flemming Dalum in action though and share decks with any of them any time.

TIJ: We have heard of an Australian mini-tour… is it right?
KA: We’ve always had requests from the US and Australia too, only problem with touring so far becomes expensive and we could not afford. These days we are getting an incredible reaction to our latest mixtape from the other emisphere, including promoters and DJ’s so we are more optmistic about a mini tour there now.

TIJ: …in Italy too?
KA: Unfortunately no confirmed dates in Italy at the moment, for some reason we have played much more abroad than here. That’s a good excuse for you guys to have a little holiday and come along, innit?

TIJ: News from the future?
KA: Cars still dont fly, water is expensive now, they shut down Badoo but cheer up, people still want to freak out to the music.
